... Both: "Women..." *sad headshake*
And - both betrayed their loves, and then repented. Except nothing productive came out of Daeron's repentance, I'm afraid. :sadangel:

----
Tolkienverse Meets Potterverse crossover 19 - Daeron meets Severus Snape.
Feedback is always welcome, but I particularly crave for feedback from Snape fans this time, because this is my first drawing of this loveable guy. ;) Canon and anatomy nitpicks welcome as well.
///Also - funny how I see more parallels between HP and The Silmarillion, rather than between HP and LotR. Not at all what I expected when I began this series. :hmm: ///
----

Daeron the Elf belongs to J.R.R. Tolkien, Snape to J.K. Rowling.

*EDIT - *smacks forehead* Can't believe I've forgotten not many people have read the Silm. and are probably clueless about this piece - the Elf-woman Daeron pines for is Lúthien, who ended up marrying a mortal Man - naturally, Mr. Handsome Minstrel doesn't approve a bit. ;)

Snape in green cloak? I guess it's a gift from Daeron :P I prefer his monk-like clothing from the movie, it corresponds well with his "forever alone" way of life and in the books he also always wore black (except for one tiny moment at a quidditch match as I remember, when he wore green robe, but I imagine this as super-dark green because grassy green is a bit OOC for him)

I also always pitied Daeron, and Beren is so boring and "all-too-perfect" (Luthien is justified in being too-perfect and having much superpowers, she is part Maia after all, I wouldn't call her Mary Sue as many fans often name her :P).

I admit calling her Suethien at times though. ;P I think these two are actually the story's weakest characters, both being all too perfect. Maiarin descent or not, the flying part in Angband was the last drop for me... -_-

And I have another candidate to "Fellowship of Unrequited Lovers", this time from Polish literature. I've drawn him recently and in character he is more like Celegorm than Daeron, but he is also a musician and free spirit, so he reminds me both of them, and a girl he loved also chose a guy who was a real Gary Stu.

So much to talk about... so much to empathize with... :D

I really like both Snape's and Daeron's designs. I can't decide which is better, actually. Also, rather randomly, that's a very good hand of Daeron's. The left one. And I like his boots, too.

Snape's not wearing all black? :o (Eek)

Thanks a lot! LOL, those boots of Daeron's are actually based on mine, except for the uppermost part; I wasn't feeling particularly creative. :D
Nope, not all black :omg: ... IDK, maybe he's felling particularly festive? ^ ^

Didn't remember Daeron from Sil, must say - read it only once and long time ago. But for sure his story rings a bell and he would find a perfect companion in Snape to share his sad story.

Not a terribly intersting dude, as far as I am concerned. Maybe if I read a fanfic some day that gives him some touching background, I'll find him more relatable. Snape, on the other hand... ;) Thanks for the comment and the fave!

Great piece, you made me laugh to tears. Poor Snape and poor poor Daeron. Although Snape is a little more pitiable than Daeron since Beren never bullied the elf, he bullied poor Celegorm (MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA actually it was the other way around, still...). Apparently ladies love unkept men.

Yeah, Daeron's characterisation is pretty flat (well basically non-existent) compared to Snape's, so I don't have much sympathy for him. Maybe if I read a good fanfic on him one day, I'll re-evaluate my view of him, but so far he's pretty uninteresting for me.

Fanfictions on Daeron... I don't know any, sorry. But I can suggest you a great fic (humor) about another infamous bard, Salgant. It is called "Quo Vadis?" and written by a fantastic author called Tehta. Since I read it I could not despise him so vehemently anymore.

I don't think i have ever heard much of daeron, mainly because i tend to just skim over the whole beren and luthien story mainly because of me feeling sad and frustrated for Finrod Felagund, lol :-) But next to that I think Maeglin of Gondolin is a Snape-like character through and through. i find it hard to picture him in my mind without seeing Snape. Now I need to read the Silmarillion again :D
Good work with this!

Funny, because I see a couple of similarities between Eöl and Snape, Daeron and Snape, many between Fëanor and Snape, and the only thing that for me connects Snape with Maeglin is the love triangle thing. Perhaps there is the unhappy home life thing as well, alright. But Maeglin loses it for me on the bravery front the moment he betrayed those who sheltered him, his own family - I don't think Snape would ever do that.

yes, that's what Snape really is, but we see little of it because of the whole thing being seen from Harry's point of view, and remember Harry hated(or at least disliked a lot) Snape. Snape's true character can be seen only in behind the scenes/pensieve or deducing from the many clues Rowling left. Whatever more than meets the eye he would certainly never allow Harry to see. Yes, I guess Maeglin is a whole lot darker, while Snape may only look dark when beneath the surface, he really isn't.

Nothing productive came out of Daeron's repentance? Didn't he produce a lot of fantastic music? Every great artist needs a tragedy, right?

My only critique of Snape is, as someone's else has mentioned, the color of his clothes. One needs to use a bold hand with Snape: a heavier black and a darker green. JKR never specifies the exactly color "Slytherin Green" is, but a light yellow-green doesn't quite seem right to me. I use a dark leaf green to line his cloak in my "John Wellington Snape" [link] (If you can crossover with Tolkien, I can crossover with Gilbert and Sullivan.) Of course that's entirely my own opinion. And it also has to do with the different media we're using. It's harder to be bold with a delicate medium like colored pencils.

That's my only criticism, though. His face and hair (and hand) are perfect!

For another crossover of Snape with one of his literary (or in this case cinematic) brothers, see [link]

As far as I recall, Luthien falling for Beren had just the opposite effect on Daeron, and he stopped making music. After she fled, so did he, and nothing is known of his further fate. That fully classifies as 'nothing productive' to me, though if new material by JRRT was discovered on what courageous deeds Daeron did during his wandering, I am ready to re-assess my opinion.

The black robes are a pain to draw with coloured pencils, and I'm not happy about the greyish effect of them either (though it might be argued that as he was ever careless about his appearance and presumably clothes, SS might well not care about the fading colour of his robes... IDK) Lime-green, or as we say 'poison green', somehow seems to me very fitting for one who works with poisons, so that was a deliberate choice.
Thanks for your opinions, and I'm glad you liked my rendering of Snape!

It's been a few years since the last time I read the Silmarillion. I must be getting Daeron mixed up with Maedhros, walking endlessly on the shores of the sea singing in pain after throwing away the last Silmaril. It's time for me to read Tolkien again!

I hadn't thought of the color being "poison green." Clever idea! I still prefer him in a darker green, but that's just a matter of taste. I withdraw the criticism.
